Judge Eric T. Washington was appointed for a third time as chief of the D.C. Court of Appeals, the organization that picks the court’s top judge announced Tuesday.

Washington, 59, was the only candidate vying for the chief’s position, according to the District’s Judicial Nomination Commission. In a statement, the commission lauded the Court of Appeal’s performance under Washington’s leadership, citing his efforts to provide electronic access to the court’s dockets and reducing the median time cases are on appeal to 352 days in 2012, from 505 days in 2007.

Washington is also chairman of the Joint Committee on Judicial Administration, which creates the policies for the District’s courts. In 2011, Washington was elected president of the Conference of Chief Judges, a national organization which develops educational and policy programs for the nation’s courts.

Washington was first named to the four-year position in 2005. Prior to being named as chief, Washington served as a judge on both the District’s Court of Appeals beginning in 1999 and Superior Court beginning in 1995.

The commission is a seven-member group made up of lawyers, a U.S. District judge, a vice president of the AFL-CIO and D.C. Baptist preacher.
