Seamless Healthcare Transition for Our Servicemen and Women in the VA

Dear Servicemen and Women,

There should be no net burden on the soldier, sailor, airman or marine when they transition from active duty to a veteran health care facility. Sadly, the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have yet to establish a fully functional, sharable health record for both servicemen and veterans.

That’s why, as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, I recently held a hearing to examine VA efforts to develop a uniform health record with DOD. Three months ago, DOD and VA certified that their electronic health records could finally exchange data through implementation of a read-only application. However, the hearing revealed that only a small percentage of health care records are effectively shared between the agencies. This is unacceptable. As a result, I received a guarantee from the VA Chief Information Officer to work with me to establish a medical record system that delivers the quality and coordination that our veterans deserve.
Ensuring our nation’s heroes receive high quality, coordinated health care services is a top priority of mine. Rest assured, I will continue to hold VA accountable and provide rigorous oversight of the development of a functional electronic health record.

Sincerely,

Senator Mark Kirk
